      <hr noshade="true"><a name="ndxgenid_roadmap510"></a><a name="ndxgenid_roadmap511"></a><p class="para_topic">The <b class="uiTerm">Promote</b> capability is a good way to create derived parts, for example, to maintain the associativity between a casting and a machine.
      </p>
      <p class="para_topic">The <b class="uiTerm">Promote</b> command associatively copies a part from the component into the parent assembly. Features can be added at the assembly level, and will maintain associativity to the part history in the component part.

                  <p class="para_tip_body">To understand the Promote function, you need to have a good understanding of NX <a class="links" href="javascript:void(0)" onclick="top.openFile('roadmap/03topic_4.html');return(false);">.prt files</a> and <a class="links" href="javascript:void(0)" onclick="top.openFile('roadmap/03topic_6.html');return(false);">assembly structure</a>. In this case, a component is used to point to a source part using assembly techniques, but this isn't a typical assembly.

      <p class="para_topic">To create an associative derived part from a base part:</p>
      <ol type="1" start="1">
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">Start with the base part.</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">Create the derived part file. (This part will become an assembly)</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">Add the source part as a component into the target part.</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">Promote the base part model to the derived part.</p>
            <p class="para_item">Keep the derived part (the parent assembly) as the work part.</p>
            <p class="para_item"><b class="uiTerm">Insert</b> &rarr; <b class="uiTerm">Feature Operation</b> &rarr; <b class="uiTerm">Promote</b></p>
            <p class="para_item">Select the solid body to promote.</p>
