An ambient light was added to the third image to try to simulate the effects of global lighting in the room.

In the radiosity calculation you can see how indirect lighting effects bring out the subtle differences in how those surfaces are being illuminated.

In the second and third rendering cases, the shadow areas are totally black, or uniformly brightened by the ambient light to a solid gray color.

In the First scene the difference is in the slightly warm color of the walls. The color tint is caused by the red cylinder which is reflecting some reddish light to the other surfaces in the scene. This effect is totally ignored by the normal Improved rendering methods.
