If the .prt file contains an NX assembly, the lower section of the form used to select layers or reference sets for parts is made insensitive. Another field, named Reference Set, is made active in this case. Enter a reference set name. The geometry corresponding to this reference set will be imported for all parts in the assembly. However, for any part that does not contain this reference set, the entire part will be used. The reference set name is case sensitive.

The toggle on the form Use Existing Entities applies when importing an assembly. If this toggle is on, any parts or assemblies being imported that already exist in the current model file will be used in the imported assembly instead of just being imported again. (If necessary, they will also be updated.)

During the import, you will be notified if any necessary .prt files are missing, but the import will continue. During the import, a number of informative messages will be issued to indicate the status of the process. The report lists newly imported items, updated items and any problems during the import.

The NX assembly may contain some parts modeled using inch units and others with millimeter units. The parts will be properly converted internally into SI units, but you may need to set your I-deas model file units to whatever system you would like to use for future work.

When the assembly is read into I-deas, it will be placed in a model file bin, and also displayed on the workbench unless another assembly is already on the workbench. Any parts or subassemblies will be stored in a bin and given names generated from their file name with the prefix "UG_" such as "UG_filename." The part number will be given the same name as the .prt file.

Assemblies imported from NX will be treated the same as any assembly modeled in I-deas.

If the NX assembly uses variational component positioning, then I-deas will create an extra configuration called "Mainview" in addition to default "Config1." This "Mainview" configuration will not use any subassembly configurations. All configurations created will be designated as design configurations.

It is possible that during an update a part will be converted to an assembly, or an assembly converted to a part, based on changes that have been made to the assembly components in NX. In this case, the original part or assembly will not be updated, and a new one will be created instead. Notification of these changes will be included in the report generated during the import process.

It is possible to break associativity of part features when a part is editted. (The associative feature can be replaced by an I-deas feature, or the associativity can be purposely deleted so that updates do not occur.) This part may initially show the "U" in the Manage Bins Status column indicating that it needs an update. When you try to update this part, you will be given a message that the asociativity has been broken, and it will no longer be eligible for an update.
