      <p class="para_topic"> The UGII native mode software has options that affect how you interact with the UNIX operating system. These options determine how UNIX sees your file specifications. The system manager selects the options during or after installation of the UGII software by setting the UGII_OPTION environment variable. The options are:</p>

               <p class="para_td"> Substitutes the character in position  <em>a</em> for the special symbol, $, and substitutes the character in position  <em>b</em> for the special symbol, !. You can then use the new special symbols  <em>a</em> and  <em>b</em> as shorthand notation everywhere you use the $ and ! symbols.

               <p class="para_td"> Converts all file specifications to lower case letters before the operating system interprets them. If this option is set, you will not be able to access any UNIX files or directories with names that contain upper case letters.</p>

                  <p class="para_note_body">  You must specify these options in upper case characters. If you specify more than one option, separate them with a dash (-).</p>

                  <p class="para_note_body"> If you are unable to access files that are listed in the file selection dialogs, unset the UGII_OPTION variable. Prior to V17, the default was set to -LOWER. In V17, the default was changed to leave this variable unset, making file access on Unix case-sensitive.</p>

      <p class="para_topic"> You can set more than one option on a single command line, but do not separate them with blank spaces. For example, the following UNIX command substitutes the symbol # for $, substitutes the symbol @ for !, and converts all file specifications to lower case regardless of how you type them:</p>

      <p class="para_division"> Also note that changing an option does not affect any files you created before the option was changed. Therefore, changing from &quot;upper&quot; to &quot;lower&quot; prevents you from accessing files created with &quot;upper&quot; as the selected option.</p>
