UG_EDIT_PART_NAMES provides facilities to change component part references inside an assembly part. It does so without loading the part, which increases speed. It is also NX version-independent (from V10 and after).

After renaming a component, you can change its referenced name. Also, after you move a component, you can change its previous directory reference to its new one. You can also change the character case used to reference components. This can be useful when moving parts from one operating system to another, such as UNIX to Windows which handles case comparisons differently.

Frequently, sites will want to gather an assembly from a user's directory and move it to a pre-release or a release directory. Once you move the assembly, you may want to change the assemblies' structure so that retrieving it "as-saved" will find the parts in their new location. You could accomplish this with the REFILE_PART utility, but it would be slow because it would have to retrieve and refile every part in the assembly. UG_EDIT_PART_NAMES can accomplish this operation quickly.

Before You Begin

As with most powerful tools, it must be used with care. For example, if not careful, you could create a cyclic assembly structure or point two different sub-assemblies to the same component, when they previously referred to different components. For this reason, we strongly recommend THAT YOU MAKE COPIES OF YOUR PARTS BEFORE YOU EDIT THEM. Before you discard the original parts, test the changes you made by loading the assemblies in NX to make sure they retrieve as expected.

Deciding Where to Change a Reference

When deciding where to change a reference using this utility, you should understand the structure of an NX assembly. Even though higher level parents make references to children lower than their immediate children, the immediate parent of a component makes the definitive reference. When deciding where to change a reference, the general rule is: Change all parts that have a reference to the component being modified. This will mean that the next time you load the assembly into NX, it will not have to perform an update. However, for V12 and subsequent releases, you can simply rename the references from the immediate parents of the component. The update capabilty of Unigraphics NX will make all necessary modifications.

Use with UGPC

To determine what assembly structures you have in the parts you are changing, use UG_EDIT_PART_NAMES in conjunction with UGPC. To ensure that UGPC prints the directories "as-saved", use the "-a" option.
