Reference sets are an NX concept to give flexibility in displaying part geometry in assemblies.

Reference sets are named groups that are used to limit what is loaded from a part or subassembly. Many reference sets may be created in a part to only include certain geometry. When the part is used in an assembly, one specific reference set will be loaded.

Typical uses of reference sets are:

Display simplified representations. The same .prt file could contain both a detailed and a lightweight model for use in large assemblies. An assembly could show either representation.

Create a reference set named "model" to include only the solid object, excluding datums and sketches.

Display only components of interest to different manufacturing functions, for example, to create reference sets named "piping" and "wiring."

Store both a left and right hand part in the same .prt file. Display one or the other where the .prt file is used in an assembly. (An alternate way to do this is to use WAVE Geometry Linker to create linked parts in separate .prt files..)

Store deformed and undeformed models in the same .prt file. (An alternate way to do this is to use deformable parts.)

Reference sets named "entire part" and "empty" are created automatically. In the previous tutorial, you used the automatic "entire part" reference set to load the entire part. In practice, you normally do not need all datums and sketches of a component in an assembly.
