The CrystalEyes system is manufactured by StereoGraphics Corporation. The system includes an emitter device that is connected to the workstation graphics device or monitor cable, plus special glasses that respond to a signal from the emitter device. The emitter and glasses provide a 3-dimensional appearance to the NX graphics window. Separate emitter devices are required for each workstation, but any number of CrystalEyes glasses can be used with a single emitter. A UGSPLM sales representative can provide information about obtaining the CrystalEyes system.

The Mouse Distance option is unique to stereo mode, and is not available in the ordinary use of NX. This option allows you to dynamically change the distance to the part. Since perspective is automatically enabled for stereo display, changing the distance causes the part to appear somewhat larger or smaller.

** Eye Separation

This function allows the user to adjust the stereo effect by changing the simulated distance between the virtual cameras or eyes of the viewer. The more distance between the simulated eyes, the more intense the stereo effect will be. Of course, when the eye separation is too large, the user may experience difficulty in visually consolidating the two images. This function is provided to allow adjustment of the separation of the images to maximize the stereo effect and still minimize eye discomfort. This function is also useful when viewing the images from a distance longer than usual, i.e. on a large screen.

To change eye separation, press the left mouse button and move it up or down (only vertical motion is registered; horizontal movements are ignored). Moving the cursor up from the starting point (the point where the left mouse button was pressed) increases eye separation while moving it down decreases it. Eye separation can not be negative and stops at zero at resulting in the left and right images being virtually the same.

The eye separation setting is initialized to the value specified by the Ugraf***.stereoParallax resource in the Ugraf*** resource file, if it is set. The resource can be set to low, medium or high. If the resource is unset, then the setting is initialized to medium.

Depth Perception

The sense of depth in a stereo display depends primarily on the parallax and perspective attributes that are automatically used when stereo mode is enabled. You can, however, take other steps to provide an effective impression of depth. You can:

Turn ON fog in this dialog before enabling stereo mode.

Keep the part in motion (i.e., by rotating) while stereo mode is enabled. During rotation, portions of a part that are nearer move more rapidly than those farther away. This "motion parallax" contributes to the overall perception of depth.

While the part displays in front of the screen (because of parallax), try to prevent the part from intersecting the edge of the screen or window. When a part is partially obscured by an edge of the screen, the brain perceives the object as behind the screen, which can nullify the effect of parallax, reducing the sense of depth.

A quality stereo display also depends on other factors, such as color. For example, when a bright green object is viewed in stereo, viewers may perceive "ghosting" around the object. The ghosting occurs when the right eye sees the phosphor afterglow on the monitor screen of the image intended for the left eye, and vice versa. Ghosting is worst with bright green because it has the longest afterglow, but can also occur with other bright colors and with highly contrasting colors. Users can experiment with various colors to select the ones that give the most pleasing stereo display.

Considerations with Stereo Mode

NX operations are limited in stereo mode because most workstation configurations support only "full-screen" stereo. In this most common form of stereo display, Motif menus, dialogs and window frames appear distorted. To avoid distortion when stereo mode is active, the NX graphics window is made full-screen, obscuring its other windows.

A few workstation configurations support "per-window" stereo, in which the X server better supports stereo. On these configurations, it is usually necessary to reconfigure the X server especially for stereo, and the reconfiguration usually causes changes in display behavior. In particular, while the X server is configured for stereo, screen resolution or color resolution may be reduced (e.g., a screen that normally supports 1280 x 1024 resolution may be required to operate at 960 x 680 resolution).

While stereo is enabled on per-window configurations, the NX graphics window remains its original size. However, even though you might be able to see some NX pull-down menus and options, most NX operations are disabled, the same as in the full-screen stereo configuration.

Refer to the Graphics Configuration Guide for information on stereo support on your workstation. After the CrystalEyes system is installed on a workstation, and the X server is reconfigured as necessary, a special "stereo" resource must be set to inform NX to allow stereo display. Set the following resource in the Ugraf*** file to true:

*Ugraf***.stereo: TRUE

This resource setting is required in order to discourage accidental enabling of stereo display when the CrystalEyes system is not installed.
