      <p class="para_topic"> When you select Symbol Fonts from the Utilities menu, the system displays a Symbol Font Definition file selection dialog. You can select an existing symbol font file (SBF), or enter the name of one you want to create. The system then displays the Symbol Fonts menu.</p>

      <p class="para_division"> Symbol Fonts allows you to combine line objects or text or both into icon-like &quot;symbols&quot;. Later, you can use the symbols in the following ways:</p>

            <p class="para_item"> As drafting aids, add them to existing drafting aids or place them as stand-alone objects.</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item"> With text control characters, include a symbol in a Note or in the text for a Label.</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item"> In an object display font, include a symbol as part of the Pattern for a Line Font Definition.</p>
         </li>

      <p class="para_division"> Placing a Stand-alone Symbol</p>
      <p class="para_division"> You construct symbols using lines and notes that you must first create in the Drafting application. Then you use Edit Symbol Font File to define (i.e., create) a symbol in an SBF file. Once you have defined a symbol you have options to modify, copy, save, delete, update, and list these symbols.</p>
      <div class="title_division">Patterns and Symbols</div>
      <p class="para_division"> A symbol is similar to a pattern in that it is a single object representation of multiple objects. However, there are several differences between symbols and patterns.</p>
      <p class="para_division"> The following table compares those major differences.</p>

                  <p class="para_note_body">  User Defined Symbols are intended to provide a means of representing simple drafting, machining, or manufacturing symbols. Creation of overly complex or large symbols may result in degradation of the symbol's display resolution. Display resolution decreases with an increase in character height and increases in the number of text characters. Resolution also decreases as you increase the physical width and/or height of the geometry included in the symbol.</p>

      <p class="para_division"> NX supplies an SBF file, UG_DEFAULT.SBF, with installation of the software. This file contains ANSI surface texture symbols and other useful symbols. You cannot modify or delete the symbols that are in the UG_DEFAULT.SBF file nor can you create User Defined Symbols in the file.</p>
      <p class="para_division"> You can, however, create your own SBF file and copy the UG_DEFAULT.SBF file symbols into it. Then you can define new symbols and modify, copy, save, delete, update, and list all symbols in your SBF file. This could be a file that everyone shares.</p>
      <p class="para_division"> Alternatively, you may want to have several SBF files, i.e., one SBF file for electrical symbols, one SBF file for welding symbols, etc.</p>
      <p class="para_division"> You can create an unlimited number of SBF files. Each file can contain any number of symbols.</p>
      <div class="title_division">SBF Platform Compatibility</div>
      <p class="para_division"> Defined Symbol Files (.sbf) are binary and are not necessarily compatible between different platforms. .sbf files created on OSF and Windows machines are compatible with each other, and .sbf files created on AIX, HPP, SGI, and Sun are compatible with each other.</p>
      <p class="para_division"> There are two methods you can use to resolve .sbf platform incompatibility problems.</p>
      <ul>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item"> Use the UG2MCON utility program (UGMENU) to convert binary files from 1 format to another.</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item"> Create a .sbf file on one platform and place the symbols in the part file using Drafting's User-Defined Symbols dialog. You can then open the part on an incompatible platform and save the symbols in another .sbf file.</p>
         </li>
      </ul>
      <div class="title_division">Create an SBF</div>
      <p class="para_division"> You can create a new SBF by entering a name when you are presented with the file selection dialog after choosing the Symbol Fonts option.</p>
      <div class="title_division">Part File Symbols</div>
      <p class="para_division"> When you select a symbol from an SBF file, it is copied into the current part file. The next time you use the symbol, the part file symbol is displayed. This allows you to modify the symbol in the part file or the SBF file without affecting the symbol in the other file.</p>

                  <p class="para_warning_body"> Merged symbols may be replaced. For example, if part file A and part file B contain the same symbol name, and part file A is merged to part file B, then the symbol in part file B will replace the symbol in part file A.  </p>
