Hardware

The Hardware option uses the system graphics library to generate the seven standard line fonts. It does not honor user-defined line fonts. Instead, the system draws curves with fixed, system-dependent dashed patterns that remain constant even if you zoom the view. If many of the curves in your model use non-solid (dashed and/or dotted) fonts, selecting hardware line fonts can improve drawing performance and reduce memory consumption.

Software

The Software option generates non-solid curves with the values you enter in the Dash, Space, and Symbol size fields on this dialog. It also uses user-defined line font information, if there is any. (For more information, see File→Utilities→Line Fonts). As you zoom the view, the displayed size of the dash pattern changes. This is because pattern sizes are specified in part units.

Using the settings on this dialog, you can specify the physical size of the dashes, spaces, and symbols when the display generates. In general, the dashes, spaces, and symbols are not the same size relative to the geometry as in a plot, because the plot is usually at a different scale from the display.
