The default selection preferences (see Preferences→Selection) are intended to provide smooth, immediate feedback that clearly indicates which objects are being discovered for selection. These settings, however, may need to be adjusted depending on the nature and complexity of the model. In some cases, the feedback may be visually excessive or even hinder performance. When this seems to be the case, the primary selection preferences to consider modifying are:

Preview Delay – By default this is set to zero. On a complex model, though, selection might feel like it is not able to keep pace with the cursor motion. Try increasing the Preview Delay (even slightly) to correct this behavior.

Highlight Hidden Edges – This is on by default. This feedback is most desirable when attempting to select objects that are mostly or entirely hidden behind other objects. Otherwise, to prevent too much clutter, you may prefer to turn this off.

Highlight with Thick Width – This also is on by default. This helps you clearly see the edges and curves discovered for selection. But as with Hidden Edge highlighting, this feedback may be visually excessive, and may impact selection performance.

If the nearest point on an object to the cursor position is outside of the z clipping bounds, the object is not selectable. This is true even if a visible part of the object is inside the selection ball. An exception to this rule is that a visible short line (under 1 millimeter as it appears on the screen) can be selected, even if the nearest point is clipped.

To select a face or a body, note that you may not be able to select it if the closest point on the face is out of bounds, even though its edges or silhouettes are within bounds. When part of a face lies outside a boundary it can sometimes be hard to see in a wireframe view where the boundary clipping begins, but in a shaded view, the clipped face is always easily seen.

For rectangle and polygon selection, the inside/outside/crossing is applied to the object as a whole, even if it is clipped. However, if the object is completely invisible because it is out of bounds, you will not be able to select it.
