The normal installation of NX includes a specialized version of the Xess spreadsheet called xessu, for Xess NX. You can start the NX version of Xess only from a NX session; it cannot be started from the command line.

Both Xess and Microsoft Excel functions are exactly the same in conjunction with NX except for the following operations:

In Xess, a function name is preceded by the "@" character, but this is not true in Excel. For example, to use the absolute value function in Xess, you would type "=@ABS(5.3)", but in Excel you would type "=ABS(5.3)".

For arrays or functions that take up more than one cell in the spreadsheet, the input for Excel is different than for Xess. In Xess you simply select the first cell, type in the function, and hit enter, but for Excel you must first select all of the cells that the function will fill, type in the function, and then hit Ctrl-Shift-Enter to evaluate the function.

When specifying a range for a function, Excel uses a colon ( : ) where Xess uses two periods ( .. ).

Graphs created in Excel by NX are opened as a sheet in a workbook, whereas in Xess it would open as its own window. Different sheets in a workbook can be displayed by selecting the tabs at the bottom of the screen. When you create a new graph, that sheet will automatically be displayed.

Microsoft Excel does not distinguish between uppercase and lowercase characters in names. For example, if you have created the name Sales and then create another name called SALES in the same workbook, the second name will replace the first one.

Spreadsheet Pop-Up Menu

You can open the Spreadsheet Pop-Up menu anytime you are in the spreadsheet by clicking MB3. The Spreadsheet Pop-Up menu provides quick access to many of the cell functions found under the Edit and Format pull-down menus.

Using Spreadsheet Views - Xess Only

Use additional spreadsheet views to access more data from spreadsheets. The functions for spreadsheet views are under the spreadsheet View pull-down menu.

A spreadsheet view is an additional spreadsheet window that you can use to look at another region of the spreadsheet. Use View→New Views to add another spreadsheet window, and then use the scroll bars to position the additional view. Working in a view is the same as working in the main spreadsheet window. If nothing else, using multiple views reduces the amount of time spent scrolling around the spreadsheet to get to the data you want to see.

The size, position, and orientation of additional spreadsheet views are saved with the spreadsheet data in the NX part file, and are restored when the spreadsheet is brought up from NX.

Spreadsheet Limitations

Excel does not support use of the 'Automatic Save' add-in in an embedded spreadsheet. If you are using Excel 97 with this feature, NX will not be able to open an Excel spreadhseet. If you are using Excel 2000, NX can open the spreadsheet, but disables the 'Automatic Save' add-in.
