QuickTime VR is a cross-platform standard, developed by Apple, for presenting panoramic “movies”, constructed from a series of images from a fixed viewpoint, which allow the viewer to freely rotate around the viewpoint and “look” in all directions object “movies“, constructed from a series of images of an object taken from different angles, which allow the viewer to rotate the object in any direction in order to view all sides.

The technology is an extension to the QuickTime movie player, hence the terms “panoramic movie” and “object movie”.

The software to view a QuickTime VR movie once created can be freely obtained from Apple via the internet, if you do not have it already. Many web sites around the world provide QuickTime VR panoramic or object movies, and usually have links to enable the down-load of the latest copy of the viewer.

More information can be found at the QuickTime VR web site, the URL for which is http://www.apple.com/quicktime.

Panoramic movies are constructed from a series of views of a place taken from the same spot but at slightly different angles. These images are then combined into a single image to allow viewing. Using the QuickTime VR viewer, a user can pan around this image, looking in any direction she chooses.

Object movies are slightly different in that they consist of a number of views of a static object taken from different points around the object. This allows the user to fly around the object (the effect is identical to, and often described as, rotating the object around any axis).

For panorama you need to position your eye point somewhere in the scene using the View→Navigate functions. Select QTVR Panorama from the output options in Setup.

For an object movie you would generally do a fit on the geometry, then select one of two types QTVR object movies (for low or high resolution movies). The low resolution object movie generates fewer frames of the image which results in a smaller output file, but more coarse movement.
